Theatre!

I made this theatre last year with the help of my good friend Amy Rhian. It was used in a film for a high end fashion brand (which is unfortunately top secret and the film is not allowed to be published!) The scenes were quite traditional inspired by Victorian silhouettes, and once we had filmed the black and white version we then painted everything and shot the whole thing again in colour.

The theatre itself was made out of wood and the sets were all made from mountboard. I made slots between the floorboards so that we could move the puppets from underneath. Spring Studios directed the film, it was so fun working in their studios for a couple of weeks.

My friends of the wonderful Robincollective are hosting the DogOlympics/CanineGames in the summer, to coincide with the human equivalent. They asked me to come up with a series of illustrations for the posters and so I've been working on some dog characters and a logo. Here is my first one! More to folloW Woof.

I was commissioned by Brand Advocate to make 2 paper explosions for estate agent, Domus Nova's windows. They wanted me to use the brand colours as well as photographs of their properties. With a wonderful workforce behind me, we made 1000s (yes, 1000s) of cubes and geometric shapes out of coloured paper and photographs and hung them with fishing wire to a board. We only had an evening to install the 2 'explosions' so we prepared them in Brand Advocate's office and transported them to Domus Nova once they had been made. Inevitably there were some casualties in transit but after a few hours all shapes were in place and looked good! (one of the two windows is in the photo above). I need to get some pictures of them in the day time! Huge thanks to all those who came and helped me cut, score, glue and hang all those shapes!! - Sarah Jane, Laura, Lydia, Zena, Colleen, Laurie, Maricor and Maricar!!

I've been a bit hopeless at updating my blog recently... moved house and studio at the same time so my world was taken over by boxes. but it's ok because I've been making lots of cardboard things with the boxes I've now unpacked. Anyway, here is a picture of my area of the studio (doing a project at the moment which involves lots of cones, hence the cones) which I'm very excited to share with graphic designer, Pete McGormack, and set designers Sarah Parker and Sarah May - very inspiring, lovely people! I'm particularly excited about my little storeroom I can keep my paints in, I've never had a store room before.

It was a bit of a shock to see my goofy face in the Times this morning! But here I am with my bicycle friends laughing because my friend Amy was making me laugh while a Times photographer snapped away at me the other day. Luckily the article is not quite so embarrassing, and actually very interesting, written by a nice lady called Carol - it's all about freelancing, and focuses on 5 freelancers who work in different industries.... and I'm one of them!

A few weeks ago I made this paper-cut illustration for the front cover of the 'Narey Report on Adoption' published inside the Times Newspaper. I got the brief on Sunday evening, made the paper cut on Monday and it was printed in the newspaper by Tuesday, probably the quickest turn-around I've ever had! Really enjoyed working on it.

I decided to make a paradise paper island for the A4 paper festival in Sydney. In order to get it there in time for the festival I dropped it into the water of the River Thames and pointed it downstream. A few days later I was very pleased to hear that it had floated all the way there safely despite the fact that it's made of a soluble material. The inhabitants of the island are now enjoying the beautiful weather of Sydney! Here's a few pictures of the island in my studio:

Silouette puppets!

I made these silhouette puppets a while ago for an animation (which unfortunately I don't have) but I really enjoyed making them. Each limb is on a hinge (either made of thread or split pins) so they can move around and be animated. I have always been inspired by the animator Lotte Reiniger, her silhouette puppets are so beautiful. I love this documentary about her, her patience is unbelievable!

GAP Paper Window Display in Production!

I was commissioned by YCN and GAP to make 7 paper cities for the GAP window in Milan as part of the Milan Design Festival. Along with some brilliant illustrators and paper crafters we made an exciting colourful display in collaboration with luxury paper company Fedrigoni!

Here's me making maquettes of each city to work out how they will pop up. Because each paper city was being shipped to Milan from my studio in London, I had to make the models so that they could be flat packed and transported as easily as possible. I decided to treat each one as a giant paper pop up – they could lie flat as well as come to life as a 3D pop up model and I wanted each city to pop up in a different way.

Time to make the final models! Here's New York and Milan being made in my studio and a list of things to do in the last few days before the courier arrived.

All the paper cities folded down neatly into this big cardboard folder....

....and arrived safely in Milan!

The amazing Jamie Brown (in the left window) made and installed his playful vinyl type while Alex of YCN (in the middle window) helped me hang all the paper cities and models.

Here's me taking the models out of the folder and checking they were all ok while a little audience watched me work!

The wonderful people at Crown commissioned to me to make a colourful paper London for their Sony photography exhibition in SOMERSET HOUSE.... So, with the help of set builders Beanie and Fran, and paper crafter Miss Amy Rhian, I constructed a 8 ft by 15 odd ft Robot Cat City based on London. Within the scene you can spot spinning robot buildings, a floating hot air balloon, cranes, boats, buses and the famous landmarks - St Pauls, the Gherkin, Big Ben, and a moving London Eye. The city is inhabited by bizarre robot creatures, cats and birds and a dog... there's even a robot Boris in there if you can find him! Pop along to Somerset House to see for yourself (I'll put up finished pictures soon) its from 26th to 31st April. Thanks so much to Casey, Charlotte, Jem and of course the most amazing set makers of all time Beanie, Fran and Amy!

After much work and a sleepless weekend we finally finished and installed the colourful Christmas paper installation for ad agency AMV BBDO. The magical AMV BBDO castle stands surrounded by a working electric railway whilst the paper chain of 396 personalised gingerbread men and women are named after every single employee of AMV BBDO! Special thanks to Amy Butler and all our lovely helpers, Lou Blackshaw, Megan Jones, Corinne Smith, Anna Macauley and Jake Green for the photographs!!

I recently completed 5 short animations (with the help of my good friend mr geoffrey taylor and LOTS of chocolate snacks) for the new Make a Wish website created by digital agency, Weapon 7. It marks the start of a new partnership between Make A wish Foundation and Cadbury and all money raised through the website will go towards sick children :) I created the little characters and set and animated them in collaboration with Weapon 7 who took care of all the post production (sound, editing and after-effects bits). The pair created black cherry and champagne jellies set with 24- carat gold to honour the legendary superstar, Micheal Jackson. I was lucky enough to recently art direct on David Wilson's (Blink Ink) latest music promo for the London based band 'We Have Band'. The stop motion video is made up of thousands of photographs of the band member's faces and LOADS of animated face paint! - very time consuming work but I think the results are amazing.... As sponsors of this year's Free Range show Grafik Magazine commissioned Alex Ostrowski and myself to make something for the show. We decided to craft a flock of recycled birds using old issues of the magazine and recycled paper donated by Arjo Wiggins, The five bird houses acted as post boxes at the private view - people were invited to write messages on feathers and post them through the windows. Thanks so so much to my lovely assistant Jess Dance for all her incredible help. She makes the most beautiful creations out of material, card and all sorts, you must check them out (here)

David Wilson (of Blinkink), in which I helped art direct a couple of months ago - spot the wolf masks and mirrored objects I made! The animation is all done in camera, reflected on mirrored panels from an animated sequence on each record disc. To find out more about how it was made watch the 'making of' here.

The Fedrigoni Mountains!

The Fedrigoni Mountains have finally been unveiled! Pop along to the exhibition at the Fedrigoni Showroom in Farringdon to see them surrounded by an exhibition of wonderful work by Container Plus, Rob Hunter, Helen MacIntyre, Rude, Supermundane, Sophie Kern, Adam Hayes, Nous Vous, Nicholas Saunders, Chrissie Abbott, Marcus Oakley and Luke Best. Each illustrator was asked to 'visually explore' a designated mountain peak and document their findings on a B1 sheet of Fedrigoni paper. Thanks SO MUCH to all 12 explorers who braved the mountain slopes! Thanks to Patricia and Guy Archard for the photos.

Wolf Masks

I made these masks for the very talented David Wilson of Blink Ink to feature in his latest music video. I also made other props on the day of the shoot and so I'm very excited to see the finished video. From what I saw it's going to be amazing so I will post it up here soon!

Exploration Begins

On Monday we met up with the twelve intrepid illustrators to show them their mountain and give them their B1 piece of Fedrigoni paper so they can set off on their imaginary journey and visualise their exploration! Illustrator Nicholas Saunders is keeping a blog of his progress on the YCN site.

Last week I collaborated with Alex Ostrowski, Johanna Lundberg Kristina Grundberg and Elin Svennson for the Guardian's creative section. We were asked to produce some colourful 3D letters to accompany an article called 'creative stocktake' which is about the value of creative industries during the credit crunch - interesting stuff!
